Being Needy

Well, little Juliette is now 3-1/2 weeks old and her pattern has changed a bit.

Before she used to sleep most of the day – after feeding and burping she’d pretty much fall asleep and sleep peacefully in her crib until she got hungry again, perhaps 2-3 hours later.

For the last week she’s become a little more work. She is now wanting to feed 3-4 times in a row, so within 3 hours she wants to feed 3-4 times. Often these feedings are less than 15 minutes apart, so once she burps she starts fidgeting and smacking/licking her lips. If we don’t take the cue then, she starts kicking her legs and flailing a bit with some little “Aaaahhh!” noises. And then if we don’t act within 2 or 3 minutes, the full wailing starts. She may only feed for 4 or 5 minutes, falling asleep at the breast. But if Mom tries to retrieve her parts, baby Peach will start sucking again!

And after she’s done feeding she won’t go to sleep unless someone’s holding her or she’s allowed to co-sleep with Mom. It’s been a tiring and somewhat frustrating week for Mom as she’s unable to do anything other than feed, change and sleep with Juliette.

Happily she’s still a good sleeper at night. She’ll do the multiple feeds between say 7-10 pm, but after that she goes to sleep quite quickly and stays sleeping for up to 4 hours straight. Another feed, then back down for another 2-3 hours. We’re crossing our fingers that this pattern stays!
