Waiting…
It’s now 4 days past the estimated due date. I emphasize the word “estimated” because no one really knows for sure when the baby should be born. We’ve been told to expect up to 42 weeks before the baby shows up on its own, and to expect medical intervention if it goes beyond that point.
Neither of us, Becoming-a-Dad and Almost-a-Mom, are freaking out. Yet. This pregnancy has been textbook healthy and normal, so there’s no real concerns from either of us.
We saw the midwife again today and all is still within normal boundaries. A physical exam showed that her cervix is still barely dilated but softening further – and like last time, it could be anywhere from hours to days before the real show happens. Likely not hours though, as Mom-to-Be is not feeling any regular contractions.
So we wait.
She’s having the odd contraction now and then, so we went for a long walk down to a restaurant, had dinner then walked back. During the walk back she had a small contraction but walked it off. Since then I don’t think anything has happened. She has a bit more cramping in the pelvic region but nothing else to tell.
In these waning hours of our carefree and selfish lives, we now are taking advantage of every opportunity to go out for dinner or a movie and do things as a couple. Soon we’ll be doing things as a family, with the attendant responsibilities, complications and joys that will bring. But until then, we’re going to savour our freedom.
