Gender Guessing

More and more people are asking us whether we know if it’s a boy or a girl or a girl or a boy. And the answer is yes, we do. But we’re not telling!

It’s funny how this seems to be a big burning question for a lot of people. And until the advent of ultrasound – very recently – most parents hadn’t a clue what the gender of their baby-to-be was. They just had to wait and see what popped out. And so there are all sorts of old wive’s tales about how this or that definitely means you’re having a girl or a boy.

The funniest one I’ve heard so far came from one of her colleagues. The woman said, “I know you’re having a girl because you’re not ugly!” A back-handed compliment of sorts I guess, but the underlying belief is that having a boy makes your face uglier. And if you went to grasp for a scientific reason, they say it’s because of the male hormones mixing with your body causing changes.

Personally, I didn’t really want to know ahead of time but Ms. Pregnant One made it clear she wanted to know. And since the doc won’t tell you the baby’s gender ahead of time unless both parents consent, I gave mine. It was either that or having to remove a frypan from my skull.

Neither of our parents want to know. Well, let’s make that most of our parents don’t want to know. My dad for sure says he doesn’t want to be told until it’s born, but I know my mom would like to know ahead of time so she can buy clothes and things.

Which brings on an entirely different rant about kid’s clothing, but I’m not going to get into that today. It will take up far too many words and result in extreme spleen venting.
