Website Hosting for My Blog
I want to say a big thank-you to my hosting company, BCWebnet.com. They’ve been exceptionally helpful with getting my blog up and running while providing fast and trouble-free website hosting. After moving to them from my other hosting company (a horrifying and painful experience which I won’t get into), BCWebnet.com is a dream. I’d be lost without them.
One of my concerns when setting up this and my family website was privacy – where was my web hosting company really located, and where would my data be stored? I wanted to make sure that my data was being held in Canadian jurisdiction under Canadian privacy laws – not subject to the arbitrary whims of the US Patriot Act (under which the US government could copy and take my information at any time without notifying me).
Being Canadian I also wanted to support a company based in Canada, but found that many so-called “Canadian” webhosting companies actually are reselling packages from other providers in the US and elsewhere in the world. I was happy to find that BCWebnet.com is 100% owned and operated within Canada, using their own servers in Canadian datacenters.
I have a number of different websites using their Family Website Hosting plan. It’s reasonably-priced and more than enough for any blogging, photo-sharing or other uses you might have for a family website. It’s perfect for setting up your own WordPress blog (used for BecomingADad.com) as well as Gallery2 for photo sharing. Hosting the applications yourself means that you own your content, you know where it is and you aren’t bound by any of the “free” sites’ end-user agreements – some of which declare that they have rights to your photos and content.
