Overindulgence

I’m not sure if it’s really fair to say that this is about overindulgence, though overindulgence has definitely played a role.

She’s been working over Christmas – Dec. 24 and 25 day shift, and now Dec 26 and 27 night shift. Her colleagues have beeing bringing in goodies, especially Christmas day. So of course she being of low-self-control and pregnant, she ate herself silly. And to top it off, forgot to take her high-powered prescription antacid the day before and only took it about an hour before bedtime.

Not good.

So Christmas night she lay down to go to sleep and woke up several times between 11:30 pm and 2:00 am choking and spluttering as her reflux gastritis came back with a vengeance. I was very concerned – I could hear her stomach burbling and gurgling away and her swallowing in her sleep, and then suddenly she sat bolt upright as she started choking and coughing. It was terrible. She couldn’t speak but stumbled out to the bathroom where she coughed and coughed for several minutes. I gave her some water and Tums and made a ramp out of pillows so her upper body was elevated.

For the next couple of hours she tossed and turned, occasionally choking and coughing but not as bad as the first time. Finally the antacid kicked in and she finally fell into a peaceful sleep.

*whew*

As a side note I got her the book “Belly Laughs” by Jenny McCarthy. I haven’t read it but it came highly recommended by a friend who told me it covers all those unspeakable things that no one tells you about pregnancy. Of particular note to you reluctant dads out there is the review by Maxim magazine: “Best Book for Her… This way-too-revealing pregnancy book will hit snooze on your girlfriend’s baby clock.”

I wish I’d found it last year!
