Urinary Tract Infection
She went for her blood and urine tests the other day, and just got a call from the midwife telling her she has a urinary tract infection (UTI). So that kind of accounts for the incessant need to pee. Apart from that all the rest of her test results were well within normal range.
This is the first time in her life she’s had a UTI. E. coli is the culprit, a very common bug that normally lives in your intestines and helps with the final digestion of your food. It turns out that it’s a very common for pregnant women to get urinary tract infections.
So she made an appointment to see her doctor. At the appointment the doc (not her normal doc – who was away) mentioned that it’s definitely something she needs to treat as it could potentially cause a miscarriage. She was prescribed some nitrofurantoin to dispatch the bugs. Never heard of the stuff before, but it comes in bright black-and-yellow capsules.
Up to now it’s still been a bit of a non-reality to us. Sure, she’s getting bigger and noticing some physical changes (COTTON!), but it hasn’t really hit either of us that we’re about to be clubbed over the head by a screaming little Nipple-Sucker in a few months. It’s more been a joke between us about how our parents and friends are going to react than anything.
Well, the mention that the UTI could cause a miscarriage tweaked something in my head. Suddenly the idea that she might lose the Plum smacked me in the face and I started realizing that I didn’t want that to happen, and that I’d be rather let down if it did. She didn’t say anything about this, but I could tell by the way she relayed the doc’s concern and then went straight out to get the prescription that it bothered her too.
The other part about this was that she told me how the doc double-checked that the drug was safe for the fetus as well as Pending Mom. And how at the pharmacy she had the pharmacist check once again that the prescribed medication was not contraindicated for pregnancy.
Funny how attached we’ve become to the Critter and it’s still just the size of a plum.
